Caress of Steel finds Rush stretching into suites and darker textures, with Neil Pearts narratives taking over. Side twos The Necromancer still gives chills, Lifesons volume swells and gritty sustain carving out scenes. Lakeside Park is the palate cleanser, all chiming guitars and a buoyant bass move in the chorus. This LP pressing opens up the space, and the low end sits deeper without clouding the mids. Recorded with Terry Brown back in Toronto, its the bridge between Fly by Night and 2112 in feel. File it next to those and, for heft, early Sabbath.
