In 2004 Jay-Z and Linkin Park released their collaborative mashup EP, ‘Collision Course’, a unique blend of the worlds of hip-hop and rock. The project emerged from MTV’s “Mash-Up” series, where artists from different genres were paired together. The result was an explosive fusion of Jay-Zs sharp, gritty rap style with Linkin Parks intense, alternative rock sound, which had already earned both acts massive individual success. The EP features six tracks that blend some of Jay-Zs most iconic songs, like 99 Problems and Dirt Off Your Shoulder, with Linkin Parks tracks like Numb and In the End. Perhaps the best-known mash-up from the EP is “Numb/Encore,” which gained immense popularity and even won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2006. The blending of these genres worked so well that it captured fans from both worlds, proving that the barriers between musical styles could be transcended in innovative ways.
