Need You Tonight still slinks on that clipped guitar chank, with Michael Hutchence dead-centre, while the string swell and breathy sax in Never Tear Us Apart land like a late-night confession. Producer Chris Thomas keeps the grooves lean, giving Jon Farriss and Garry Gary Beers all the room they need to strut without bloat. This clear vinyl pressing does the record a favour too, as the low end sits deeper and imaging snaps into place. File it on the shelf next to late-80s Prince, but the difference is INXS lean harder into rock muscle without losing the shine.
